Narratives about Imam Hussain (as)
09.01.2018

1. The Prophet Muhammad (saaw) said: 'Hussain is of myself and I am of Hussain. O' Allah be pleased with those who please Hussain and hate those who hate Hussain.'

2. The muslims feeling gratitude towards the Prophet (saaw) for his efforts in guiding them offered to reward him with gold. The Prophet (saaw) answered them with a verse that was revealed to him, "Say, No reward do I ask of you for this except being kind to those of kin" (verse 23/sura 42). Al- Kashshaf ( an authoritative interpretation of the Holy Quran) narrates that when this was revealed, people asked the Prophet "O, Prophet of God, who are the ones whose respect is made obligatory upon us in this verse?" The Prophet (saaw) answered "They are Ali, Fatema and their two sons."

3. The Prophet Muhammad (saaw) said: 'Hassan and Hussain are masters of youth in Paradise and Fatimah is the chief of their women'

4. One day, when the Holy Prophet was in prostaration (sajda) during a prayer, Imam Hussain (a.s) then climbed on his back. The Holy Prophet remained in prostration untill Imam Hussain (a.s) came down himself.

5. Ibn Saad (an eighth century historian) narrates from Ash-Shabi that Imam Ali (a.s) while on his way to Siffin passed through the desert of Karbala. He stopped and wept bitterly. When asked regarding the cause of his weeping, he commented that one day he visited the Holy Prophet and found him weeping. When he asked the cause, the Apostle of Allah replied, " O' Ali, Jibrael has just been with me and informed me that my son Hussain would be martyred in Karbala, a place near the bank of the river Euphrates. This moved me so much that I could not help weeping."

6. Anas bin Harith narrates that: One day the Holy Prophet (saaw) ascended the pulpit to deliver a sermon to his associates while Imam Hussain and Imam Hasan were sitting before him. When the sermon concluded, he put his left hand on Imam Hussain and raising his head towards Heaven, said: "O my Lord! I am Muhammad Thy slave and Thy Prophet, and these two are the distinguished and pious members of my family who would fortify my cause after me. O my Lord! Gabriel has informed me that my son Hussain will be killed. O my Lord, bless my cause in Hussain's martyrdom, make him the leader of the martyrs, be Thou his helper and guardian and do not bless assassins.'

7. The Prophet (saaw) looked toward Ali, Hasan, Hussain , and Fatimah (sa), and then said: "I am in war with those who will fight you, and in peace with those who are peaceful to you."

8. The Messenger of Allah said: "He who loves al-Hasan and al-Hussain, loved me, and he who makes them angry has made me angry."

9. Usamah ibn Zayd narrated: "I went to the Prophet (S) one night about something I required and he came out with something (I did not know what) under his cloak. When I had finished telling him my business I asked him what he had under his cloak, and when he opened it I saw al-Hasan and al-Hussain on his hips. He then said, "These are my sons and my daughter’s sons. O Allah, I love them, so I beseech Thee to love them and those who love them."

10. Anas ibn Malik Narrated: "When Allah’s Messenger (S) was asked which member of his family was dearest to him, he replied, "Al-Hasan and al-Hussain."He used to say to Fatimah, "Call my two sons to me,"and then would sniff and cuddle them."

11. Whosoever wishes to such a person who lives on earth but whose dignity is honoured by the Heaven-Dwellers, should see my grandson Hussain.

12. O my son! Thy flesh is my flesh and thy blood is my blood; thou art a leader, the son of a leader and the brother of a leader; thou art a spiritual guide, the son of a spiritual guide and the brother of a spiritual guide; thou art an Imam the son of an Imam and the brother of an Imam; thou art the father of nine Imams, the ninth of whom would be the Qaim (the last infallible spiritual guide)

13. The punishment inflicted on the murderer of Hussain in hell would be equal to half of the total punishment to be imposed on the entire sinners of the world.

14. When the Holy Prophet informed Lady Fatimah of the Martyrdom in store for his grandson, she burst into tears as asked "O my father! when would my son be martyred?""In such a critical moment,"replied the Holy Prophet, "when neither I nor you, nor ‘Ali would be alive."

This accentuated her grief and she inquired again, "Who then, O my father, would commemorate Hussain’s Martyrdom?"The Holy Prophet said, "The men and the women of a particular group of my followers, who will befriend my Ahlul Bayt, will mourn for Hussain and commemorate his martyrdom each year in every century."

20. Anas says, "I was with Imam Hussain (a.s.) when a female slave came and gave some flowers to Imam (a.s.). Imam Hussain (a.s.) told the female slave, ‘I free you in Allah’s path.’ I said, ‘O son of Messenger of Allah (S)! She gave you worthless flowers. Why did you free her?’ Imam Hussain (a.s.) stated, ‘Allah has trained us this way, ‘When a (courteous) greeting is offered you, meet it with a greeting still more courteous, or (at least) of equal courtesy.’ Better than the flowers was freeing that slave that I did.’" (Biharul Anwar, vol. 44, p. 195)

It is related that one day Hazrat Fatima az Zahra (a.s.) took her sons Imam Hasan (a.s.) and Imam Hussain (a.s.) to the presence of the Holy Prophet (S) who was seriously ill (and he later died because of it). She requested the Holy Prophet (S) to present to her sons something as inheritance (from his attributes). To which the Prophet (S) replied, "As for Hasan, he shall inherit my awe and supremacy, and as for Hussain , he will inherit my generosity and valor."

25. Shaikh Muhammad ibn Shahr Ashob in his Manaqib quotes from Ibn Umar, that one day the Prophet (S) was seated on the pulpit delivering a sermon. Suddenly Imam Hussain (a.s.) came and his legs got entangled in the end of his shirt and he fell down and started weeping. I do not know as to how I alighted from the pulpit."

26. In the same book it is related through Hafs bin Ghiyas from Imam Ja’far as Sadiq (a.s.), that one day the Holy Prophet (S) prepared to recite the Prayers and Imam Hussain (a.s.) was standing besides him. The Prophet repeated his Takbeer seven times and on the seventh time Hussain recited it correctly. Imam Sadiq (a.s.) says that thus reciting Takbeer seven times before starting the Prayers (Salat) is recommended (Sunnat).

Imam Sadiq (as) narrates, "A person approached Imam Hussain (as) requesting him ‘Enumerate for me those virtues that Allah (the Glorified) has specifically bestowed on you.’ Imam (as) cautioned, You shall find it difficult to digest our virtues. However that man did not desist and Imam (as) yielded to his demands by narrating only one tradition. Imam had not yet finished with his narration, that the man’s condition metamorphosed radically and his hair and beard turned completely white. Immediately, he was made to forget that tradition. Later Imam (as) said, It was only with mercy that my narration was erased from his memory." 28. Abdullah bin al-Fadhl al-Hashimi said: ‘I said to Abu Abdullah Jaffar bin Muhammad al-Sadiq (as): ‘O son of Allah’s messenger (saaw), how come the day of Ashura is the day of ordeal, sadness, mourning and weeping but not the day on which Allah’s messenger (saaw) died and the day on which Fatima (as) died and the day on which Amirul Mumineen (as) was murdered and the day on which al-Hasan (as) was murdered via poison?’

He (Imam Jaffar) replied: ‘The day of Hussain is worse than the other days because the people of the cloak honored by Allah almighty were five, when the prophet passed away, Amirul Mumineen, Fatima, Hassan and Hussain (as) remained behind, they were hence a consolation for the people. When Fatima al-Zahra (as) passed away, Amirul Mumineen , Hassan and Hussain remained as a consolation for the people. When Amirul Mumineen (as) passed away, Hassan and Hussain remained as a consolation for the people. When Hassan (as) passed away, Hussain remained as a consolation for the people. When Hussain (as) was killed no one amongst the people of the cloak remained behind for the people, therefore his departure was tantamount to all of them departing and his existence was tantamount to all of them existing, therefore his day became a great ordeal’. ("Elal al-Sharaei", Shaykh Seduq, vol. 1, p. 225–226)

29. Imam Jaffar al-Sadiq (as) said: ‘The sky wept over al-Hussain (as) for forty mornings with blood, while the earth wept over him for forty mornings with darkness blackness. The sun wept over him for forty mornings with an eclipse and with redness, the mountains dispersed, the oceans poured forth, whereas the angels wept over him for forty mornings. No woman amongst us ever dyed with henna, nor used any oil, nor any kohl nor cohabited with her husband until the head of Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad was brought to us, and we are still aggrieved even after all that’. (Bihar al-Anwar, vol. 45, p. 77)
