40 Sayings of Imam Hussain (as)

1. Never will be salvaged the people who win the consent of the creature at the cost of the dissatisfaction of the creator. (Maqtal Khawarazmi , Vol. 1 , P. 239)

2. O' people , the Messenger of God said: Whoever sees an aggressive tyrant legalizes the forbidden of God , breeches divine laws, opposes the tradition of the Prophet , oppresses the worshippers of God , but does not concede his opposition to God in word or in deed , surely Allah will place that tyrant ( in the Hell ) where he deserves. (Maqtal Khawarazmi , Vol. 1 , P. 234)

3. People are slaves to the world, and as long as they live favorable and comfortable lives, they are loyal to religious principles. However, at hard times, the times of trials, true religious people are scarce. (Biharol Anwar, Vol. 78, P. 117)

4. Don't you see that the right is not conveyed and the wrong is not prohibited. Let believers wish to die and righteously meet their God. (Biharol Anwar, Vol. 78 , P. 117)

5. To me , death is nothing but happiness, and living under tyrants nothing but living in a hell. (Tohaf-al- Uqoul , P. 245)

6. Those who worship God for the hope of gaining , they're not real worshippers ,they're merchants. Those who worship God out of fear ( of punishment ) , they're slaves. And those who worship God to be grateful towards their creator , they are the free people, and their worship is a real one. (Biharol Anwar, Vol. 78 , P. 117)

7. Whoever seeks the satisfaction of people through disobedience of God; Then God subjects him to people. (Biharol Anwar, Vol. 78, P. 126)

8. Avoid oppressing the one who does not have any supporter against you, other than the Almighty God. (Biharol Anwar, Vol. 78, P. 118)

9. One who reveals your faults to you like a mirror is your true friend, and one who flatters you and covers up your faults is your enemy. (Biharol Anwar, Vol. 78 , P. 128)

10. Wisdom will not be complete except by following the truth. (Biharol Anwar, Vol. 78, P. 127)

11. A man came to Imam Hussain (Master of the martyrs) and said: I am a sinful man and can't avoid doing sin, please advise me. Imam (as) said: If you can do these five things, then commit sin as much you like. First of all: don’t eat the sustenance of God and commit sin as much you like. Second: go beyond the domain of God and commit sin as much you like. Third: seek a site where God can not observe you and commit sin as much you like. Fourth :if the Angel of death comes to you to take away your soul, expel him away from yourself and commit sin as much you like. Fifth: If the Angel of Hell was about to throw you into the hell-fire, stop him and commit sin as much you like. (Biharol Anwar, Vol. 78, P. 126)

12. One who loves you prevents you from all evils, while your enemy persuades you to commit wrong and evil.

13. Act in this world like a person who knows that he will definitely be rewarded for good deeds and punished for sin and crimes.

14. One who removes troubles from a believer, God expels troubles from him in this world and in the Hereafter.

15. The most forgiving person is one who forgives in spite of his ability to punish. (or avenge)

16. A) If you hear some one backbiting people, try to be unfamiliar to him. B) Don’t speak about your brother (in faith) behind his back except what you like to be spoken about you behind your back.

17. God initiated commanding the good and forbidding the evil as a compulsory duty for us, as He knows that if these two duties are well performed and established, then all other divine duties whether difficult or easy, shall be well established as well ; and this commandment and forbiddance shall invite people to Islam , and secure the rights of the wronged people as well as arouse opposition against tyrants & transgressors.

18. I wage the imposed holy war (in defense) not because of my self-conceit and pride, nor to incite corruption or oppression but for betterment of Muslims, the followers of my grandfather Mohammad, may peace & blessings of God be upon him & his descendants. I aim at commanding virtues, and prohibiting vices and I love to follow the traditions and conduct of my grandfather Mohammad (S.A) and my father Ali ibne Abi Taleb (A.S).

19. To argue with one who is unable to think reasonably is an indication of ones ignorance.(Never argue with imbeciles)

20. Beware of oppressing a person, who finds no one to revenge against you except God the Mighty & the Majestic.

21. It is better to die on your feet than to live on your knees.

22. Treat your neighbours as if they were your family.

23. A person will not forget two types of faces in his life, the one who helped him in time of need, and the one who left him alone in difficult times.

24. Avoid speaking until there is a reasonable occasion; those who enter into useless talk, even if expressing truth, are found reprehensible.

25. The most generous of people, is the one who gives to those from whom he has no hope of return.

26. To severe attachment with the wicked world is the greatest wealth.

27. Death with dignity is better than a life of humiliation.

28 During absence of your friend, speak about him/her in a way you wish others would speak about you during your absence.

29. The ones who are silent when others are oppressed are guilty of oppression themselves.

30. Charity and alms are the best remedy for ailments and calamities.

31. Piety is the best weapon of defense.

32. Wisdom is the noblest heritage.

33. A poor man is a stranger in his own town; misfortune and helplessness are calamities; patience is a kind of bravery.

34. Try to keep your body healthy during your lifetime. (Tuhaf al-Uqul, p.239.)

35. Whoever worships God as He really deserves it, God will grant and bestow upon him more than his wishes and capabilities. (Bihar al-Anwar, vol.71, p.183)

36. The needs of people to you is one of Gods bounties on you, do not detest or feel depressed by these needs. (Bihar al-Anwar, vol.74, p.205.)

37. Whoever wishes to postpone his death and boost his daily income should tie bonds with his relatives. (Bihar al-Anwar, vol.74, p.91.)

38. Wisdom reaches perfection only by following truth. (Bihar al-Anwar, vol.75, p.127, hadith # 11)

39. Hastiness is a kind of stupidity. (Bihar al-Anwar, vol.75, p.122, hadith # 5)

40. Beware! Do not be among those who are concerned about the sins of others while neglectful of their own sins. (al-Kafi, vol.8, p.49, hadith #9)
